TOOTH DECAY EXPLAINED
Before a cavity is ever a hole, it's a soft patch of enamel that loses minerals. Your dentist calls it a "watch spot." You might see it as a white, chalky spot. A dental health expert explains how to help rebuild enamel before the drillings and fillings.

"I tried fluoride rinses, whitening strips, and sensitive toothpaste, but my dentist kept watching the same spot of early decay.
I started chewing one piece of Larineco after coffee and snacks, and within weeks, my teeth felt smoother and the cold sensitivity eased.
People laugh when I tell them this, but I do almost zero cavity fillings.
Not because I'm lazy. Not because I don't care about cavities or oral health.
Because I know the truth about what's really behind tooth decay, unlike what big dental wants to tell you.
Before a cavity ever becomes a big hole, it's a soft, white, chalky patch. And this is what nobody explains to you. Not your dentist. Not your teacher. Not your mom.
If you've ever been told you have a "watch spot" by your dentist, there's a good chance your tooth actually is not broken yet.
My name is Daniel Whitaker, and I've spent 18 years studying holistic oral care and the real scientific studies and research behind all of it. I've seen hundreds of people restore early damage before they ever need a drill from a dentist.

Enamel is a mineral surface.
97%
of your enamel is made of one mineral: hydroxyapatite.
Every time you eat or drink something acidic, bacteria produce acid that pulls minerals out of the surface. This is called demineralization.
Then your saliva slowly puts those minerals back. That's remineralization.
Your mouth is in a constant cycle of demineralization and remineralization: losing, regaining, losing, regaining.
The surface has gone soft and porous before anything has broken.
And the modern diet makes it worse. Every sip of coffee, every snack, every bite restarts demineralization. That's why cavities form.
You brush twice a day, but that barely covers it.

You brush twice a day, but that barely covers it.
You brush for 4 minutes a day.
Your enamel is under attack for the other 23 hours and 56 minutes.
These are the early stages before cavities fully form. At this stage, you don't need a drill. You need minerals.
But once a drill touches your tooth, here's what happens:
The drill touches the tooth. That tooth is now in the system for life.
You get a filling. Fillings have a lifespan.
The filling gets replaced. The replacement is bigger than the one before it.
Then it's a crown.
Most people have no idea the whole chain could have been stopped at the soft patch stage.
So the real question is: what is putting the minerals back, and when?
Most people with early signs of tooth decay have already spent hundreds of dollars trying to fix it. Probably thousands if you count every toothpaste, rinse, whitening kit, and dental bill over the years.
That money wasn't wasted because you did something wrong. It was wasted because none of those products do the one job your enamel actually needs.
Fluoride toothpaste is on your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day. Then you rinse, and it's gone. But acid attacks happen every time you eat or sip throughout the day: coffee, snacks, meals. For the other 23 hours and 56 minutes, your teeth are left unsupported, and that's when acid-producing bacteria do the most damage.
Mouthwash kills bacteria without choosing which ones. That includes the good bacteria that help keep your mouth at a neutral pH. In a neutral mouth, acid-producing bacteria struggle to grow. Wipe out the good bacteria, and the acid producers are usually the first to come back.
Whitening strips use peroxide that softens the enamel surface and leaves it more porous, so new stains soak in faster. With repeated use, the enamel can wear down until the yellow layer underneath starts to show through. So you whiten again, and the cycle repeats.
Regular sugar-free gum is better than sugar gum, and it freshens your breath. But it doesn't put minerals back into your teeth or do anything to strengthen your enamel.
The 6-month checkup is reactive care. Between visits, demineralization can start to compound, and the structure of your teeth can break down, causing microscopic lesions. Daily proactive care supports enamel health and helps rebuild enamel in the early stages, giving your teeth the support they need with a modern diet.
None of these put minerals back into your enamel, and none of them work throughout the day between brushings. None of them break the cycle.
The only thing that can help rebuild a mineral surface is the mineral itself: hydroxyapatite. It's made of calcium and phosphate, the same mineral that makes up 97% of your enamel. It's bioactive, which means it bonds with your teeth naturally.
NASA pioneered the synthetic version in the 1970s to help astronauts reduce tooth and bone mineral loss in zero gravity.
Japan has used it in toothpaste for over 40 years, and today Japan has some of the lowest cavity rates among children in the world.
But toothpaste has the same problem as fluoride. Two minutes, twice a day.
So I started looking for a proactive way to add hydroxyapatite throughout the day, so my teeth could remineralize more than they demineralize. Without giving up coffee, snacks, or meals. Just more support.

So I started looking for a proactive way to add hydroxyapatite throughout the day, so my teeth could remineralize more than they demineralize. Without giving up coffee, snacks, or meals. Just more support.
Larineco puts nano-hydroxyapatite into a chewing gum to support enamel remineralization between brushings.
Putting nano-hydroxyapatite in gum solves the timing problem. Chewing increases saliva, and saliva carries the mineral across every surface of every tooth. One piece stays in your mouth for up to 30 minutes. That's 30 minutes of contact right after coffee or a meal, when your enamel is under the most acid.
Nano-hydroxyapatite helps rebuild enamel from the surface down. It fills in the microscopic rough spots on your enamel and supports remineralization where minerals have been lost. That's the step every toothpaste, rinse, and whitening kit misses.

Xylitol starves Streptococcus mutans, the main cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. It can't digest xylitol, so it can't produce the acid that erodes your enamel, and over time, that helps reduce how much of it is in your mouth. Chewing also boosts saliva, which rinses away buildup and neutralizes acid.
Erythritol works with xylitol to support a balanced mouth and gentle cleansing.
Natural gum base (chicle, mastic, myrrh, acacia) replaces the plastic-based polymers in regular gum. Mastic and myrrh have natural antibacterial properties that help support gum health, and they give you a longer-lasting chew.
One helps rebuild. One starves the bacteria doing the damage.
It's not a toothpaste you rinse away. It's not a bleach. It works with your saliva, not against it.
Chew a few pieces a day, one after coffee, meals, or snacks. That's the whole routine.

ok but does this actually work on a cavity that's already there? my dentist wants to fill one next month

Hi Rachel, honest answer: if your dentist says it's an actual hole, you need your dentist. Nothing you chew will fill a hole. Where this helps is the stage before that, the soft, chalky spots and "watch spots." Ask your dentist which one you have. Either way, chewing it after meals still helps protect the rest of your teeth.

Probably a dumb question but is nano-hydroxyapatite safe to swallow? You're chewing it for 30 minutes so some of it has to go down.

Not a dumb question at all, Linda. Hydroxyapatite is the same mineral your teeth and bones are made of, and it's been used in oral care in over 70 countries. There's also no fluoride in it, which is the ingredient most people worry about swallowing. If you have a specific health concern, check with your doctor.

4 months in and I want to answer the "how long" question because I asked it too. Fresher breath was the first week. Teeth felt smoother around week 4 or 5. The sensitivity took about 2 months. Then at my checkup last month, my dentist said the spot he's been watching for 2 years hasn't changed and we don't need to do anything yet. First time I've left without a filling on the schedule.
